“Oh, home, let me come home
Home is wherever I’m with you”
Finally, he was going home. After 9 months of misery, lastly, this has ended. At last, they have won this war, with him as the last man standing.
The last battle was brutal. He killed 3 soldiers of the enemy’s last battalion, while they opened fire at his last battalion. The last enemy soldier killed all his mates before he could shoot him. But eventually, he did, and here he was, the last man standing.
Standing here in this garden of corpses, he could feel nothing except his longing to go home. To his wife, to his children.
Then his radio made some noise
“Major Jaydon, can you hear us? I repeat, can you hear us?”
“Yes, I can captain. I have good news, we won this war captain, we finally won.”
“Major Jaydon answer us? Are you able to hear us?”
He checked his radio; the mic was broken.
“Major Jaydon? I repeat. Major Jaydon, are you alive?”
“Sir I think he did not survive the last battle,” said another voice on the radio.
“I think that’s true. It was our last battalion. We will have to check out the war field itself through air surveying.”
“Major Jaydon’s longing to meet his family will finally come true sir.”
“How? What nonsense are you speaking? He is dead now, how will he meet his family now?
“So is his family sir” he replied with a feeble voice.
“What? When did this happen?”
“Sir in the last bombings the enemy air force dropped bombs in the area in which Jaydon’s family lived. His wife along with his two children died in those bombings. No one told this to Jaydon. All of us were waiting to tell him after the war was over. But now he will be able to see them on the other side.”
The radio silenced. Along with the mic now the speaker too broke.
A gentle cool breeze touched Jaydon’s breeze as a tear fell down his cheeks. It started raining.
The dark clouds surrounded the field, the field in which a number of corpses were lying. Dead bodies with an alive soul, a soul with a longing to go home. Among those corpses was there an alive body, with a dead soul. A body that felt nothing. Not the cold, not the raindrops, not even the tears coming out of its eyes.
That body made a decision. The decision to be one with its soul. Its dead soul. Jaydon picked up his gun and placed the muzzle on his head. For that one second, his soul was alive. Full with the happy memories of his wife and children.
“Oh, home, let me come home”
He pulled the trigger, and with a loud sound, his body and his soul became one. That loud sound filled the battlefield with a never-ending silence. The quietest silence you can ever experience. And with that loud sound, Jaydon finally returned to his home.
“Home is wherever I’m with you”
